In the world of alternative health, there are tons of options, or modalities that can be used for a variety of budgets, physical restrictions, preferences and desired outcome. Thai massage is one such modality that pairs well with chiropractic care, and if you haven’t experienced it at least once, I encourage you to do so.
What is Thai massage?
The word massage is a little confusing for those of us who only understand massage in a traditional sense, such as Swedish or deep tissue. Instead, Thai massage is an Eastern massage form where you are fully clothed, or mostly clothed, and instead of laying on a table, you are on a plush mat on the floor.
The Thai massage practitioner uses heated bags to warm and sooth areas of your body while stretching you similarly to yoga poses and applying gentle pressure to meridian energy points. The therapist will use not only their hands, but also their feet and legs to move you into the beneficial stretches and joint movement.
7 Benefits of Thai Massage
The recipient of the Thai massage typically leaves feeling:
Stretched. Muscles become tight and even knotted and the stretching opens them up, increasing oxygen and blood flow. Thai massage has been nicknamed “the lazy man’s yoga” because you don’t have to hold poses, yet the therapist moves your body in a similar way.
Relaxed. Massage, and body work in general, help to reduce and relieve stress.
Grounded. The warm, relaxing environment and connection with the ground as well as the therapist helps you to remain in the present.
Energized. The practitioner applies pressure to meridian points to help energy move through your body. Loosened muscles allow for more blood flow as well.
Improved Range of Motion and Flexibility. Because of the stretching and loosening of tight muscles, most clients see an increase in their flexibility and movement.
Pain Relief. Opening up painfully tight muscles can reduce discomfort within them, and also reduce headaches associated with tension in the neck and shoulders.
More Positive. Deep relaxation leads to a more positive life outlook. The combination of relaxation, muscle release and meridian energy work creates an experience that can lead to revitalization and optimism.
Thai Massage and Chiropractic Care
Thai massage opens your muscles up to create a more relaxed state which allows chiropractic adjustments to hold better. Tight muscles aren’t pulling against the spine and instead are allowing blood flow to create better overall wellness.
